(In many films, the lyrics often comment on the scene as well.) I’ve been wanting to use the King Oliver and Tiny Parham records in a film for years now. She boards the deserted ghost bus. So no, this won’t be a demo level audio track, but as far as the material goes, it is more than up to snuff.
Save, I was just entering my senior year of high school when Terry Zwigoff’s, was released and proved to be one of the most formidable films of my adolescence.
Enid (Thora Birch) and Becky (Scarlett Johansson) might argue all the time, but they’re still best friends and as close as possible, without being lesbians, of course. Criterion, in typical form, has given this a new 4K restoration under the direct supervision of director Terry Zwigoff.
1994), [The Criterion Film Club] / Tue Oct 27, 2020 03:28:22 PM, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Jason Woliner, 2020), This site is not affiliated with The Criterion Collection. (I have about 1,500 78s—I try to keep my collection down to the essentials.)
Format: DVD Change. One further note about Skip James: His “I’m So Glad” was part of a huge hit rock LP by Cream during the sixties.
They’re used to films where the director clearly endorses the source music chosen for a scene—and the viewer is also supposed to love it. Despite having such a rabid love for this film, it’s been well over a decade since I last experienced it; watching it again for its new release on Criterion Blu-ray, I was both excited and a little concerned. Let’s hope this marks the start of a series of larger roles for Buscemi, as he could certainly handle the tasks. I was just entering my senior year of high school when Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World was released and proved to be one of the most formidable films of my adolescence. It would have been nice to see interviews with Terry Zwigoff, Daniel Clowes and maybe Steve Buscemi, but what’s here is still solid. Skip James I knew would work, and it was a great privilege to be able to use his music as part of this film.
As her cynicism becomes too much to bear even for her best friend, Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson), Enid finds herself drawn to an unlikely kindred spirit: a sad-sack record collector many years her senior (Steve Buscemi). Terry Zwigoff’s first fiction film, adapted from a cult-classic comic by Daniel Clowes, is an idiosyncratic portrait of adolescent alienation that is at once bleakly funny and wholly endearing.
The film comes on a dual-layer disc in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 with a new 1080p/24hz high-definition presentation that comes from a new 4K restoration. Save
Therefore, you are gay. He came over and played me a bit of it, and he was hired. As with most Criterion Collection releases, this is the definitive edition of the film, with a gorgeous restored 4k digital transfer and a bevy of special features. The excellent cast is well chosen and performs to great ends, especially Steve Buscemi, Thora Birch, and Scarlett Johansson, who simply shine in their respective roles.
The restoration work has thoroughly cleaned this up and other than the film clip that opens this film (which I swear was also cleaned up here in comparison to what is on the MGM DVD) there isn't a blemish to speak of. I have been in awe of James’s music ever since and believe him to be the greatest blues musician ever to record. Also from the DVD is a scene where Buscemi is working on selling some of his records to a collector at his âparty.â On top of that Criterion also provides a couple of alternate edits to a couple of scenes, including one for the initial âWeird Alâ diner sequence. Copyright © 2020 Penske Business Media, LLC. This modern pop music is almost impossible to parody—it’s a parody of itself. Adapted from the 1997 graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, “Ghost World” is indeed painfully melancholy, but let’s not forget how confidently light on its feet and hilarious it is.
My own likes and dislikes, musically speaking, are so out of touch with the rest of the world’s that it was problematic choosing tunes to use in Ghost World that would connote the same message to the audience as to myself.
I’ve always been a massive fan of Steve Buscemi, but he is usually given smaller roles, ones to help flesh out a supporting cast of players. Terry Zwigoffâs first fiction film, adapted from a cult-classic comic by Daniel Clowes, is an idiosyncratic portrait of adolescent alienation thatâs at once bleakly comic and wholly endearing. “Devil Got My Woman” was the first old 78 I ever heard that stopped me dead in my tracks. M y own likes and dislikes, musically speaking, are so out of touch with the rest of the world’s that it was problematic choosing tunes to use in Ghost World that would connote the same message to the audience as to myself. One of the only complaints I’ve ever had about Criterion is that they have too few contemporary films in their roster, so Ghost World is a welcome addition to their ever-expanding library of greatness. And then there’s Norman, the man sitting on a bench waiting for the bus that doesn’t come. But the bold color scheme is in full effect, with rich hues and nary a stray color streak to be seen, while flesh tones remain natural and consistent. You'll also find in-depth discussions on world cinema. There is also another scene between Brad Renfroâs Josh and Birchâs Enid that came as a bit of a surprise (I wonât spoil). It also then goes into more detail about the sequence itself, its influences, the performers in it, and even offering a brief bit of insight into this period of Indian cinema. One of the more curious things about the MGM DVD (though probably the coolest aspect of that DVD) was the inclusion of the dance number to âJann Pehechaan Hoâ from the film Gumnaam, which is used for the opening of Ghost World. Our music budget was so small on Ghost World that, again, I couldn’t afford it. No issues on the front of contrast either, as black levels are dead to rights and never falter, leaving behind stark shadows and a high level of detail at all times. Director Terry Zwigoff shares his own musical taste in this article about how he went about selecting songs to underscore the deadpan tone of his cult comedy Ghost World. The MGM DVD had a handful of features: a featurette, deleted scenes, a trailer, and a clip from the film Gumnaam.
Rebecca and Enid plan to move in together after graduation, but it becomes increasingly complicated as one’s aspirations supersede the other, and it isn’t hard to guess whose. For those uninitiated, Ghost World follows the lives of two recent high-school grads, played by Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch, as they enter the real world and struggle to find their identities in a world that they don’t necessarily feel like they’re a part of.
It goes back to Clowes and Zwigoff first meeting when the director showed the artist his documentary Crumb, then they talk at great length about actually trying to get financing for the film (no shock here but it wasnât easy), and then go over its release, which was rather shaky since a lot of test audiences hated the film. All three also talk about getting their respective roles (insanely, as mentioned here and in the commentary, Birch was originally considered for the Rebecca roleâin the commentary Zwigoff admits that was a mistake) and developing their characters. The fact that Enid doesn’t know who she is is made obvious in her constant cycling through wardrobe and hair fads — the green hair, or the horn-rimmed glasses, or the leather jackets — to adorn a flimsy identity. It’s not always what you expect will work. The track goes over how this segment came to be in Ghost World and the reasoning behind why Zwigoff uses it. While Buscemi is not the central focus of Ghost World either, he is granted a larger portion of screen time than usual and he proves he deserves the spotlight, by giving perhaps his finest turn to date. In addition, there’s a 37-page booklet and a separate insert containing selections from Clowes’ original comic book – a solid bonus and hopefully something that will garner more readers of Daniel Clowes’ brilliant work. This looks exceptional. A rich investment banker obliviously meets a moment of reckoning in David Fincher’s intricately plotted thriller. The track isnât all that showy and its activity is limited, but the score works its way nicely through the environment and I found background effects from street scenes and gatherings like the art show to be nice. That includes unapologetic and misunderstood loner Enid (Thora Birch) and her less tortured but still moody best friend Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson). Punctuated with an amazing soundtrack and costume design, the film captures teen angst in a creative, heartfelt and comical way, transcending the norms of the typical coming-of-age story. As with most Criterion Collection releases, this is the definitive edition of the film, with a gorgeous restored 4k digital transfer and a bevy of special features. The girls have never even considered leaving the area or each other, but now that high school is over, some rifts have started to undermine their friendship. Add to Cart. In these small roles however, Buscemi always manages to steal a number of scenes and remain memorable, so even with limited screen time, he can rack up a great performance. Nor do they want to.
Avoid the inferior recordings he made after being rediscovered by blues enthusiasts in the sixties. Terry Zwigoff’s first fiction film, adapted from a cult-classic comic by Daniel Clowes, is an idiosyncratic portrait of adolescent alienation that is at once bleakly funny and wholly endearing. Ditto with some Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. I first became aware of this while watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969 and enduring “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” during that insipid bicycle-riding interlude. Throughout the booklet there are also various photos of artwork and paraphernalia related to the film. He had no concept of blues as entertainment, or crowd-pleasing music. Of course, it couldn’t sound too dated—something more timeless was needed. Ghost World marks another excellent treatment and is certainly another jewel in Criterion’s crown. I was particularly taken by the reds, which look so pure and don't present any noticeable blocking or bleeding around the edges. All opinions are our own.
(From now on, any director using a Django Reinhardt or Louis Armstrong 78 in a film will seem derivative of Woody Allen.) I have to admit that I still prefer the comic adaptation, but the film has a limited amount of time and as such, I can forgive how some elements are glossed over, mainly the Becky character’s lack of presence at times. Stay on top of the latest breaking film and TV news! There’s an audio commentary featuring Zwigoff, Clowes and producer Lianne Halfon; new interviews about the making of the film with Scarlett Johansson, Thora Birch and Illeana Douglas; an extended clip from Gumnaam, the film featured in the opening title sequence; deleted scenes; and the film’s trailer. Itâs a rather fascinating and funny track as the participants reveal details about its production.
