I also came across my fair share of bugs. In case you blinked and missed it, Zombi was a Wii U launch title back in 2012. The in-game radar is a prime example; designed to highlight zombies on your HUD within a certain range, it mysteriously fails to work at intervals. But rather than daintily waving your hand around above a modest blood stain, Zombi will have you bludgeon your old-self into a sticky pulp before you can reclaim your possessions. Their quests sent me deep into zombie-infested districts of London, which are silent and eerie, and usually stayed that way unless I ran around like an idiot.
In a world of weapon-wielding, ever-mutating, parkouring undead, the reanimated corpses in Zombi lurching after you for a big, grisly hug will bring a nostalgic tear to your eye, even as they sweep you up into their arms and take a big chunk out of your face. Thankfully, Ubisoft has decided against abandoning the franchise and has re-tooled the game for next-gen consoles, minus some of the key features which made the Nintendo edition so unique and compelling. London remains largely as it was before, but any items you’ve collected remained ensconced in the backpack of the reanimated corpse of your previously-controlled character. As it stands, it’s a fun game that does most things right, but constantly reminds you of its biggest flaw. However, that specific praise went right out the window when it was time to fight. Because valuable goods (like bullets) are so rare, and because fighting zombies takes so long (more on this soon), Zombi’s unique death system adds welcome and constant tension to every encounter, no matter how small. And while the HUD fades away for a more involved experience, the minimap has to be displayed constantly, what with no second screen for it to live on.
Zombies often rushed me two or three at a time, making combat a slow, rhythmic back-and-forth, swing-and-hit dance, void of both skill and variety. In the vein of the Souls series, you get one chance to get back to where you croaked it and collect your goodies.
There was a problem. It isn’t a particularly beautiful game world, but Zombi rightfully puts the emphasis on sound and lighting rather than a raw pixel count. Zombi is hardly a deluxe version of ZombiU, with numerous bugs and few graphical improvements. The Wii U’s multiplayer mode has also been chopped off, which isn’t as big a loss as you might expect as the core single-player campaign was always the biggest draw of the original.
One of the most terrifying sections in the Wii U version saw you frantically tapping in the code while a zombie is clearly seen advancing towards your defenceless character. Despite different names, ages, and genders, all my survivors were really the same thing: a vessel to carry the possessions I actually did care about. The charm of a gruesome beating is somewhat tarnished when each encounter is reduced to the dreariest of drubbings imaginable. Zombies hidden mere inches away fail to flag up on the radar, springing out on you as you walk through a doorway. Considering that avoiding combat is often encouraged, not having the ability to crouch or sneak at will feels too limiting.
From the rarity of bullets to the limitations of my storage to the Prepper straight-up telling me bullets are the new precious metals, I was trained not to shoot unless there was a Capital-P Problem. Whether or not these difficulties are part of the deliberate design is irrelevant when they fail to bring anything to the table in terms of creating an uneasy atmosphere, and instead leave you feeling frustrated.
You then awaken as a new survivor bereft of supplies and set off in search of your previous avatar - now a shambling cadaver with a pack full of choice gear on its back - to charitably cave its head in with a cricket bat. Available on: Xbox One (version reviewed), PlayStation 4, PC 2012’s ZombiU was one of the Wii U‘s most interesting launch titles, as it made excellent use of the console’s GamePad controller and offered a tantalising glimpse at what second-screen gameplay could offer. Whether I’ve stumbled across more bugs or it’s a deliberate and questionable design choice as a means to create tension is anyone’s guess due to the sporadic nature of some of them. Another man fortified Buckingham Palace and used its resources, including imprisoned test-subject zombies, to work on developing a cure. August 18, 2015. In exchange for shelter or new technology, most people wanted something from me. Tell us what you think - send your emails to the Editor. Meanwhile, the absence of a dedicated peripheral with the transition from the Wii U leaves a palpable void. Guns are available but ammo is ridiculously scarce when compared to the sheer number of enemies stalking the streets, and therefore blasting your way through crowds of zombies is rarely a viable option. The port comes with a few tweaks to the gameplay. The visual upgrade isn’t significant enough to be apparent to anyone but the most dedicated ZombiU fan, and there are elements of the game’s mechanics which feel slightly clunky in 2015. She writes guides, reviews and features for GR+ when she isn't screaming at Dark Souls 2 on YouTube.
Its handling of death, exploration, and NPC design is fresh and confident, especially in the crowded zombie genre. Any urge for a reckless killing spree is quelled by the relentless nature of the undead and your tolerance for getting pawed at. Developer Ubisoft. Zombi features permadeath, respawning you at the tube station in the shoes of an entirely different survivor. What’s more, the cricket bat stubbornly refuses to leave your inventory, wallowing about and taking up a precious slot that could be better populated with a molotov, flare, or medpack once you upgrade to a stronger weapon. It’s the humane thing to do. The cast grows much larger in the second half of the game, and I welcomed the mad ensemble for the flavor it brought to an otherwise familiar setting.
Platform PlayStation 4 Xbox One. London is a novel setting for an apocalypse, and comes complete with zombies ranging from tracksuited hoodlums and sad-looking businesswomen, to swish Beefeaters and the Queen’s card. If you want more of a teetering-on-the-brink-of-soiling-yourself experience, you can play in the permadeath mode where the high risk/reward really ups the ante. On the Wii U version, the GamePad controller assumed the role of the Prepper Pad, and you could use its motion controls to scan rooms for a truly immersive experience. The mini-map – another feature which was previously restricted to the GamePad – is now in the bottom-right corner of the main screen, which is arguably more convenient, if a little less realistic. Sure, there are firearms, but they feel too weak, and Zombi constantly stresses how important it is not to use my ammo. Wii U launch title Zombi U has been ported to new-gen consoles and PC at last, bringing cricket bat zombie-smashing fun to a whole new audience.
GamesRadar+ is supported by its audience. Others are more grating, like pieces of loot whose locations were identified by the in-game scanner, but were apparently inhabiting a parallel plane of existence, because there was nothing there.
Learn More. That means you’ll have to trek to the point of your death and retrieve them, Dark Souls-style – although the difference here is that you have to kill your old avatar before it gives up its valuables. It’s a less convincing system and one which most betrays Zombi’s status as a port from radically different hardware, but after a while it becomes second nature. Learn More.
Zombi, if you didn’t know, is a new version of that game, now made for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. You’ll also notice zombies apparently walking in thin air as they ascend staircases or doors which magically trap you as you attempt to pass through, making you a sitting duck for advancing flesh-eaters. Throw in some crumpets and a pot of tea and it’s a veritable portrait of everyday life in Blighty. Unlike other sites, we thoroughly test every product we review.
Instead, you fall into a pattern of creeping through the game and taking down enemies individually with melee weapons.See also: Best Wii U Games 2015Your “Prepper Pad” soon becomes an essential item and is used to scan the area for points of interest and send out radar-like pings to spot potential threats.
