In the last few decades several objects hit the Earth in various locations. In 2012 NASA estimated 20 to 30 percent of these objects have been found. Most of these asteroids pass earth at a distance of a few thousand miles, somewhere between earth and the moon. There are some current proposals to actually build spacecraft that could test out some of these technologies. They are called near-Earth asteroids, objects made of rock that travel through our solar system and come very close to the planet Earth. Short-period comets currently with an Earth-MOID less than 0.05 AU include: 109P/Swift-Tuttle, 55P/Tempel–Tuttle, 15P/Finlay, 289P/Blanpain, 255P/Levy, 206P/Barnard–Boattini, 21P/Giacobini–Zinner, and 73P/Schwassmann–Wachmann. The NASA near-Earth object program uses an assumed albedo of 0.14 for this purpose. You have to consider the velocity, if it’s a metallic or rocky asteroid, and whether it’s fragmented or not. Once found, the orbits of those objects can be determined, and their paths predicted into the future, to see whether an impact is possible or even likely. Each one found is studied by various means, including optical, radar, and infrared to determine its characteristics, such as size, composition, rotation state, and to more accurately determine its orbit. A new telescope called WISE was launched into space in 2009 and discovered over a hundred asteroids and other objects that had been previously unknown.
