About This Game Mafia III: Definitive Edition includes the main game, all Story DLC (Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times) and Bonus Packs (Family Kick-Back Pack and Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack) bundled in one place for the first time. To me, Mafia 3 feels more like Godfather 3 with elements taken directly from Godfather II but fails to execute it. It’s just padding out the game time with pointless driving. Mafia 3 completely upturns the order by casting you as Lincoln Clay, a black southerner returning from the Vietnam war. By borrowing the driving and shooting mechanics of Grand Theft Auto while adding a certain je ne sais quoi badaboom, the Mafia games carved out a little corner of the gaming market.
Cover shooting and driving are functional, but not nearly the best they’ve ever been. You feel like years later, locals are still telling this story. Developer Hangar 13 has updated the overall presentation, polishing up the setting of Lost Heaven and fleshing out the story and characters. It seems like Hangar 13 saved their better ideas for the DLC instead of the main campaign. You’ll be doing bank jobs, stealthing around hideouts slashing throats of the mob, wading through an abandoned theme park and much more. I originally played Mafia 3 on my PlayStation 4.
Part of the reason I think it became as stale as it did is there isn’t much variance to the assassination animations and the combat style. The story of Lincoln Clay is still enthralling and handles some very dark themes quite well, but the lifeless open world structure found in Mafia III: Definitive Edition really hinders what could have been the best game in the trilogy. Whilst it’s pretty to look and explore that’s about it.
This can lead to wildly violent and cinematic executions. All the era's bright lights and blemishes are on display, and the city is a joy to witness from opening to closing credits. Instead of the dreamlike tone of the first game, or the brutalism of the second, Mafia 3 tries to capture warmth and specificity.
