Mythical in a sense and strangely filled with dark comedy, Devils on the Doorstep is an odd journey through wartime and a vast array of tragically comical characters. It is not a spoiler to say that the remaining runtime is not exactly a slow motion run to an uplifting triumph, and I spent a moment to come up with my two most likely outcomes, both of which I'd have been satisfied with, but what Jiang Wen came up with (alongside his co-writers) was so much more nuanced, perfect and brutal than anything I'd imagined. Director/actor Jiang Wen's ultra black comedy is set during the closing days of Japan's brutal occupation of China during WWII.

What surprised me is how Japanese in style the film is. Moving, fast paced (lots of movement in the shots), well acted, (I especially enjoyed the village elder, a representative of gnomic wisdom as well as village cultural sophistication (a faulty and rube literati).

I stuck with it to the end just to see if I could get it. The darkest place is under the candlestick.

Winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, this dark comedy from director Jiang Wen takes a fresh look at life under occupation at the end of WWII. This was really a fantastic film. Colonialism as a force shows its ugly head and how it pressures us to blame everything on something, pacifying those within its borders to commit inhumane actions without a second thought.
The film maniacally makes transitions of tone, from humor to suspense, from an epic-scoped comedy to an unprecedented confrontational catastrophe, everything orchestrated with an otherwordly directing. I'm assuming a certain govt. Disney + Pixar + Marvel + Star Wars + Nat Geo, Get unlimited access to the largest streaming library with limited ads, Stream on up to 4 devices at the same time. A journey that stays with you. The owner is bullied into keeping the prisoners until the next New Year, at which time they will be collected.
