Free of its Xbox 360 exclusivity, Ms. Splosion Man’s fast and frenetic platforming and over-the-top boss fights hasn’t lost a step since 2011 and with support for all manner of single-player and multiplayer options it’s still got plenty of legs here and now in 2018. As with a good proportion of ports, Ms. Splosion Man is another old game that’s been given a new lease of life on another indie-friendly console. In this seemingly never-ending cycle of prestigious – and not so-prestigious – older games being re-released for modern platforms, if anyone told me that Ms. Splosion Man – an Xbox 360 downloadable title, released in 2011 and developed by Twisted Pixel Games – was on the cards, I would have called you a both a liar and somewhat delusion. The latest creation from Twisted Pixel Games, the creators of Splosion Man, The Maw, and Comic Jumper, Ms. Splosion man comes packed with fifty levels of single player and a separate fifty level co-op multiplayer campaign. Yo, shell splode it. Trading heavily on its style and forced joking as if trying to paper-over its insecurity, Ms. Splosion Man is a gratifying 2D platformer with reasonably challenging gameplay. Each level requires the use of explosions to navigate a variety of obstacles or timing puzzles to reach the end of the level, which is literally a finish line you’ll dance into with light up disco floor panels. Ms. Splosion Man rightfully deserves to have another chance at success, and certainly deserves to not be so quickly forgotten about. Modest sized levels and checkpoints aplenty. Even loading screens have a bizarrely random humor with “tips” about shoes and beef mixed in with general game tips. Momentum is, as with most platformers, the key factor in deterring whether you succeed or fail a particular obstacle, and the vast majority of the 50 levels at hand always play with expectation by introducing variables – such as explosive barrels that propel you forward – to not only add some much needed distinguishable variables between locations, but also to add to the aforementioned difficulty. Where its peers – such as the forenamed Super Meat Boy – utilise various means to keep gameplay enjoyable throughout the most frustrating of times, Ms. Splosion Man successfully uses humour and a general light-hearted tone to great avail.
